The concept

Originally I had planned to introduce a tamping mat to compliment the tamper and the knockbox.  One
drawback of using such a packing mat is that it soon gets dirty and covered in coffee grinds - or at least it
does when I use it.  What happens is that when you place the spout on the mat and tamp, the spout picks
up fine coffee particles whcih may end up in the cup.  When using the stand the spout is elevated above
where any stray grinds may be.

The main features of the stand are:

  • A good solid platform on which to tamp
  • Spouted portafilters slot into the rest and prevent stray grounds from sticking to the spout - no coffee
    grinds on the cup
  • Makes it very easy when tamping a single spouted portafilter (they usually wobble horribly)
  • Bottom rubber mat provides a non-slip base and a nice place for the bumper tamper mat
  • Top rubber mat protects the brass and chrome portafilter from damage when you press down
  • Solves the problem of tamping with a naked portafilter
  • You can change the position of the stand/tamper space to the front or the back.

I have seen similiar stands around over the years but I decided to take it a step further by adding the rubber
parts and to make it easy when using the naked portafilter.

Tamping using the stand

The photos below show the basic use of the stand with a regular portafilter.  As you can see the spout does
not touch anywhere and the pressure is exerted through the round part of the portafilter.  In this configuration
the tamper base (small rubber disc) is placed at the front.  The steel part of the base may be rotated so that
this rubber disc is at the back.

Tamping using a naked portafilter

When tamping with the naked portafilter you simply place the flat part of the portafilter on the flat part of
the rubber mat and it will give you a perfectly level base.
Construction and quality

The main part of the stand is made from stainless steel and it has our logo laser etched into the side.  There is a
top rubber mat which protects the stand and the portafilter from damaging each other.  A bottom rubber
mat provides a non-slip base and hold the steel frame in position.

The pics above show the frame without the rubber parts.  The top rubber mat is held in place with a double
sided 3M adhesive sticker.  Rubber parts should be cleaned in cold or warm water - not in the dishwasher.

Included in 1 tamping stand set is

  • 1 steel frame with top mat stuck on
  • 1 bottom rubber non-slip base
  • 1 packing box
  • The round hockey puck (tamper mat) is part of the tamper set - but you may purchase these
    separately.  It is part TM1
